Shipping is one of the oldest form of transportation. Mankind has sailed the world looking for treasures and got back home food, materials and jewels that their fellow countrymen have never seen before. However, this form of transportation, known as break-bulk, was very cumbersome. It was a labor intensive process to individually load and unload crates and boxes on to the ships. The current form of Container Movement started around 60 years back. In 1955, Malcom P McLean bought a steamship company with the idea of shipping the entire truck with its cargo. This gave a start to the inter-modal cargo shipment. Soon standardization took place in 1961 with ISO standardizing the two most commonly used sizes even today - 20 foot and 40 foot lengths. TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit) became the industry standard reference for measurement. The journey wasn't simple. To reach here the ship, port terminal, truck and train systems had to adapt to accommodate the containers. The team at ODeX has always been fascinated by the intricacies of the shipping industry.
